Our Odd Standards

1. Words for "The Man": Regulatory Honesty

At Oregon Oddities, we don’t sell "beauty treatments," "youth-restoring elixirs," or whatever else the marketing gurus are peddling this week. We sell soap. Ironically, to satisfy the federal definition of True Soap (21 CFR 701.20)—and to stay out of the business of making empty promises—we follow three odd, but essential, rules:

  • What it’s made of: Our bars are composed primarily of alkali salts of fatty acids (specifically Tallow or Coconut Oil saponified with Lye).

  • Why it cleans: The cleaning action comes solely from the traditional soap-making process. We don't rely on synthetic detergents (SLS) or chemical foaming agents to do the dirty work.

  • How we talk about it: We represent our bars solely as Utility Cleansers. We make zero cosmetic claims (like "moisturizing" or "beautifying") and zero drug claims (like "healing" or "treating").

The Bottom Line: Why do we have to say all this? Because by staying rooted in utility, we remain under the jurisdiction of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and firmly outside the scope of FDA cosmetic oversight. Apparently, in this industry, being honest about making a basic cleanser is considered "Odd." No Luxury. Just Soap.

2. The Studio Environment: Durable Tools vs. Disposable Waste

At Oregon Oddities, we distinguish between Durable Tools and Single-Use Waste. To ensure the safety and precision of traditional cold-process soap-making, our Eugene workshop utilizes purpose minded, multi-use equipment.

  • #5 Polypropylene (PP) Container: We chose #5 PP specifically for its high heat-deflection temperature and chemical stability. During the saponification process, the reaction between lye and oils is exothermic (releases heat). These containers are built for the long haul, safely managing the heat and chemistry of every batch we pour.

  • Heat-Stable Silicone Molds: We utilize silicone molds selected for their durability and thermal stability. These are long-term workshop assets built to be stripped, cleaned, and put back to work for hundreds of cycles without losing their shape or integrity.

By investing in reusable workshop gear, we eliminate the need for disposable manufacturing components in our studio. These are purpose minded essentials, not trash.

3. The Consumer Experience: A Zero-Plastic Initiative

While we use durable Polypropylene tools in the workshop, our commitment is clear: Zero single-use plastic reaches your doorstep from our studio-made goods. We’ve stripped away the "Luxury" marketing fluff to focus on high-integrity fulfillment.

  • Every soap bar is wrapped in Kraft Paper and secured with a Paper Tape seal. We’ve eliminated the unnecessary layers and plastic waste common in mass-market soap.

  • We ship in standard Cardboard Boxes sealed with Water-Activated Paper Tape. This creates a tamper-evident seal that provides more security and less waste than standard plastic tape.

  • To keep your soap safe in transit, we use Cardboard Honeycomb Wrap. This paper structure provides the same impact protection as bubble wrap without the long-term environmental cost.

Plastic packaging is easily available and often the cheaper path. While we don't strive for "luxury" markups, we believe there is only a minor difference in effort to do what is better. This drives our initiative to ensure that every item crafted that leaves our Eugene studio is fulfilled without single-use plastic materials.

4. Transparency & Fulfillment

We aim for a widely recyclable experience. Most municipal recycling programs in the Willamette Valley and across the country accept our cardboard boxes, Kraft paper, and honeycomb wrap in standard curbside bins.

  • Check Your Local Guidelines: While our water-activated paper tape is an alternative to plastic, we always recommend a quick check of your local guidelines. Some facilities are more specific than others about paper-based adhesives.

  • The Workshop Tip: If your local provider is strict about "mixed materials," we recommend stripping the tape from the box before recycling. It’s an extra 10 seconds of effort that ensures the cardboard remains a clean, high-value resource for the recycler.

  • The Shipping Boundary: While we have a zero-plastic commitment for everything that leaves our Eugene workshop, we also partner with outside creators for our apparel and merchandise. These items are often fulfilled directly by the makers using their own logistical standards. If your merch arrives in a poly-mailer or uses plastic packaging, it is a sign that the item was shipped from outside our studio and was out of our direct control to manage.

    • If you do receive a poly-mailer from one of our partners, we ask that you please reuse it or recycle it according to your local plastic film guidelines (often found at grocery store drop-offs). We continue to advocate for better standards with all our partners, but for now, our specific packaging standards apply strictly to our studio-made soaps.

We respect that every workshop and fulfillment center has its own operational standards and logistics. While our specific zero-plastic commitment applies strictly to our studio-made soaps, we believe in being honest about the limits of our reach while maintaining total control over what happens within our own four walls.

5. No Luxury. Just Soap.

We aren't a corporate "green" brand with a marketing budget for fancy certifications or "Aspirational Green" slogans. We are a local workshop making honest utility products for makers, explorers, and the community. We use what works, we tell the truth about our materials, and we strive keep the plastic out of your home.

Our "Odd Standards" are not a fixed destination. As a small workshop, we are constantly testing new materials, looking to source closer to home, and looking for ways to reduce our footprint without sacrificing the utility of the soap. If we find a better way to wrap a bar or a more efficient way to ship a box, we’ll update this page and move the needle forward.

Feedback from the Field: If you’re a maker, a recycler, or a customer with a better idea for our workshop flow, we’re all ears. We value factual utility over "luxury" ego, and we’re always down for a better way to do the work.
